xFair Tech Talks

Daqri (Feb 2, 4-5pm, 2-190): Daqri will be talking about ARToolkit, an open source set of SDKs that are used to develop augmented reality experiences. It works across Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iOS, and Android and integrates with Unity 3D. It uses markers as targets to trigger AR experiences and supports a wide range of smart glasses. Students are strongly recommended to bring laptops!!!

Yelp (Feb 2, 5-6pm, 4-270): Websites like Yelp have come a long way from that LAMP setup in your basement. In this talk, Joey L. will walk through how large websites actually work and how they differ from that webapp you wrote for fun last week. Along the way we will touch on how our engineering team is able to keep such a large site running smoothly while changing it many times per day, and how we deal with the fires that do happen without getting burned. Three years ago, Ryan D. was a soon-to-be new grad PM, and was still unclear on what a product manager actuallydid. Most descriptions of the role are rife with opaque buzzwords. Ryan will be sharing some of his notes from the field that he thinks would have been helpful a few years ago. Yelp will also be raffling off an iPad Mini w/Retina, so remember to bring your CS or engineering resume to get a raffle ticket.

Lyft (Feb 2, 6-7pm, 4-370): Come hear about the history and implementation of Lyft Line! We’ll dive into the market fit and research behind Line, insights into some of the product decisions that were made, and an overview of the technical implementation and architecture supporting the product. An open Q&A and time for mingling and meeting Lyft engineers will follow.

Intel (Feb 2, 6-7pm, 2-190): Join Intel Leaders & Technology Experts to hear from a variety of business groups including Design & Technology Solutions, Server Development, Client Computing, Information Technology, Manufacturing Development, and Non-Volatile Memory Solutions. Immediate opportunities!

Yahoo (Feb 3, 1-2pm, E15-335): Join Frank Bentley, Yahoo Principal Researcher, as he discusses the User Experience Research methods Yahoo uses and provides specific examples of research conducted and the product impact that it has made. Yahoo takes a User First approach to building products, with all employees taking part in user research activities each quarter. Yahoo’s User Experience Research teams are involved in all stages of product planning and development, ensuring that products are designed to meet real users needs and that the products we make are usable and delightful to use in daily life. Yahoo also actively publishes its best research in venues such as CHI, Mobile HCI, and Ubicomp. The team is currently hiring interns and full-time researchers.

Oracle (Feb 3, 6-7pm): Join to learn how Oracle Solaris Studio development tools can help you write higher quality code, in less time. We will discuss how you can remotely develop applications from the convenience of your laptop environments and demonstrate how the advanced analysis tools help improve Java, C and C++ application performance, quality and security. Learn what features make Oracle Solaris Studio a development platform of choice for both individual use and in enterprise production environments.
